That a victim should come to love his torturer is part of the process of conversion. If one takes the position that ''the Party is right'' and that Oceania should, and will, rule the world, Big Brother becomes God, President, and friend in the great quest for ultimate victory. Conversely, Goldstein becomes the hated worm in the apple of Eden; he is Judas, Satan, and a personal enemy all rolled into one. For those who hate the Party, the roles are reversed. Like so much else in Oceania, anyone who takes either position, from a "goodthinker" like Parsons to a rebel like Winston, then that person is wrong.
