Mabel Dodge's efforts to get a response out of Gertrude Stein continued to be met with silence. ' " 14 Stein finally responded, albeit rather impersonally, with her final extant communication, a postcard that offered holiday greetings and depicted a group of formally clad hunters with a dead deer at their feet. Finally, in 1934, when Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas were in the United States making their celebrated lecture tour that included stops in New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Pasadena, Mabel Dodge attempted one more reconciliation, writing from Taos: "You must bury the hatchet (if it is a hatchet) & come for a good visit, you & Alice .

Twelve of the letters from Dodge to Stein were undated, and inter- Page xix nal evidence pointed to approximate dates in ten of them. Two remain unable to be dated and are included at the end of the letters section. For the Stein letters to Dodge, Dodge guessed at the dates, writing these on blue notepaper that she attached to each letter. Telegrams and postcards usually displayed postmarks indicating the day of the month and year. " When dating is reliant upon the month and year notations on individual letters, I have included these dates in brackets.

Toklas or May Bookstaver. In her poetry and fiction, however, Gertrude Stein displays a talent for the erotic, often thinly disguised, as she celebrates her relationship with Alice B. Toklas. In "Didn't Nelly and Lilly Love You" (1922), Stein relates her marriage proposal to Toklas and refers to them as husband and wife: "I am a husband who is very very good I have a character that covers me like a hood and must be understood which it is by my wife whom I love with all my life . "27The title of Stein's poem "Lifting Belly" (1915-17) clues the reader into its highly erotic suggestions: I said it I mean lifting belly.
