The relationship type that relates a weak entity type to its owner is called the identifying relationship type of the weak entity type. In Fig. 1, Course and CouSec are, respectively, the identifying entity type and the identifying relationship type of Section. As shown in the figure, an identifying relationship is distinguished by the double line of its diamond. A relationship type that is not an identifying relationship type is called a regular relationship type. Note that identifying relationships types have a cardinality (1,1) in the role of the weak entity type and may have a (0,n) or (1,n) cardinality in the role of the owner.
