Because of this, I grew up never once thinking that perhaps I couldn’t do certain things or attempt challenges because I might fail. I always saw myself as equal to “one of the boys” when it came to an adventure. My adventuresome spirit and enthusiasm for risk-taking was curtailed only by occasional illness. Most notable was a very bad bout with scarlet fever at age two.

This is a story of a farm girl’s life, drive, and perseverance. This is my story. PREFACE I wasn’t named “Strutsie” when I was born. It was a nickname I picked up when I was about three years old because everyone in my family thought it fit me perfectly. It was derived from a character in the children’s card game, “Old Maid,” a little girl named Mandy Struts. The picture on the card showed her with blond hair and blue eyes, playing dress-up in grown-up high heels and a saucy hat perched atop her curls.

It took us awhile to figure out the humor behind that advice. A peddler who stopped by once every week provided a welcome break in our routine. Gaylord Meyer drove a small, enclosed truck that he kept stocked with food staples and a few treats for children, such as lollipops and penny candy. While Gaylord was inside the house talking to Mother, Eddie and I often would “visit” the truck. More than once, Mother had to pay for candy we had unwrapped for either a look or a lick. Fortunately, Gaylord thought it was amusing and didn’t seem to be upset by our antics, understandable since it was a sure sale.
