The transmissions received on each beam are split into channels by means of an array of bandpass filters. After the frequencies of the transmissions have been changed from the 6 and 14 GHz bands to the 4 and 11 GHz bands, each channel is amplified by a separate power amplifier (twenty seven working amplifiers being needed in all). The outputs from these amplifiers are then recombined for retransmission via the seven down beams. Channels are directed from the receive beams to the required transmit beams by means of switching matrices which can be operated from the ground to suit the pattern of traffic.
This can be wasteful, particularly for small stations which operate to several routes (each carrying only two or three circuits). The use of multi-destination carriers also means that a station may have to provide a large amount of demultiplexing equipment to separate out the channels intended for it from those intended for other stations, and this demultiplexing equipment may have to be reconfigured (and possibly supplemented) when it becomes necessary to make changes in the pattern of traffic flow through the satellite.
6 SSB Some US terrestrial systems and domestic communications-satellite systems use single-sideband (SSB) modulation. In these systems an RF carrier is amplitude modulated with an FDM assembly of telephone channels and the residual carrier component is suppressed, together with one of the sidebands. The resultant transmission comprises as many RF signals as there are telephone channels; SSB thus produces an assembly of SCPC transmissions. e. 4 kHz); 9000 channels could thus, in theory, be transmitted via a 36 MHz satellite transponder if it were practicable to equip the satellite with transmitters with sufficient output power.
